I must admit that I often panic when I feel that my mind and body are exhausted, and life feels overwhelming. Whether it’s physical, mental, or emotional fatigue, in those moments, a sense of panic arises. “What if I can’t keep up with work and all the daily responsibilities?” I want to be the best parent, the best teacher, a person who is constantly evolving, and the list goes on. Although this mindset usually gives me a sense of motivation, when I’m too tired, it feels like immense pressure, followed by anxiety, replacing passion and dedication with fear and frustration. All because I don’t truly accept rest as a basic need.
What if we trusted ourselves enough to know that taking a break is like using a well-placed comma in a sentence, rather than a full stop? We all need space to recharge, heal, and relax. Rest allows inspiration, creativity, joy, and wisdom to come to us, instead of constantly chasing results and living in tension.
Yoga has helped me become more aware that, like many others, I tend to feel validated and valuable when I produce results. At the beginning of my yoga journey, I focused a lot on my ability—or lack thereof—to hold certain postures that I considered challenging. Sometimes I judged myself for my physical weaknesses instead of enjoying my body. Over time, yoga has shown me that there is no need to do anything perfectly or to force my way toward achievement. It’s enough to create space for the practice and approach the journey with curiosity and enthusiasm. Now, when I step onto the mat, I come with fewer expectations, less rigidity, I feel open and free, and my practice brings me much satisfaction and joy.
I often think: “Let’s see where today’s practice takes me. I’m open to what my body wants to experience, to how it wants to move. What does my heart have to say? I let my emotions flow freely.” This approach has helped me create space for every version of myself. I have grown in unexpected ways through my yoga practice, and this is the greatest gift I can offer my students in class — a safe space to open their hearts and fully experience who they are.
Yoga has profoundly influenced my relationship with rest. I’ve developed a deeper connection with myself, learning to let go of control and adopt a more fluid approach to life. The pressure to constantly deliver results creates a cycle of exhaustion, and recognizing that rest is a necessity, not a luxury, is the key to breaking out of that cycle. Taking a break doesn’t stop progress; it enhances it. I’ve learned to balance ambition with the art of letting go of control, allowing both rest and effort to coexist. It’s important to know where we want to go and remain dedicated, but it’s equally important to be flexible and to respect our limits and our needs.
